The new Kia Sportage goes on sale today - but dealers will only have 800 to sell until November!

A special 'First Edition' model will be the only car available between now and then which features 4WD, a 2.0-litre diesel engine.

In November it will be joined by the 2WD 1.6-litre petrol and 1.7-litre diesel models.

Michael Cole, managing director for Kia UK, exclusively told Autoblog that the launch was originally intended to be in quarter four – but he decided to bring it forward due to demand.

'When we saw the interest from the public at Geneva and the demand from dealers to get their hands on the new Sportage we had to do something,' Cole said.

'We had discussions with Korea and Kia Europe and managed to get our hands on these First Edition models. That means we can get it on sale in time for the crucial September plate change.

'It would have been more economical to launch all the models at once. Sportage sold very well in the first half of the year and we were in danger of selling out of the old model and having a gap in between that and the new one.'

Cole has high hopes for the new Sportage too – by the end of the year he expects customers to have bought 4,000. And in a full year that will rise to 10,000. No orders have been taken yet – but that's because no details on price or spec have been announced until today.

Now details of the First Edition – which boasts 18-inch alloy wheels and leather as standard – have been revealed, Cole expects customers to start snapping up the new car.

'The sales will really take off when the 1.6 petrol and 1.7 diesel models arrive though,' added the Kia UK chief. 'Nissan has proved how successful smaller-engined SUVs can be and Kia aims to take a slice of that market.'
